The basic working principle of volume and voice knob is the same, with only a few small differences. The volume knob generally uses a logarithmic taper (B), while the voice knob is generally a linear taper (A), but it may also be logarithmic.

When changing the volume or timbre knob, pay attention to the specifications suitable for the electric guitar. This is not a rigid rule, but according to experience, a single-coil pickup guitar should use a 250K knob and a double coil guitar should use a 500K knob.

Remove the knob cap before replacing the knob. According to the different styles of electric guitar, the difficulty coefficient of this step is also different.

If your knob doesn't move no matter how hard you pull it, find a cloth and put it under the knob. Then fold up the cloth and pull it up - the grinding knob cap should fall off.

Next, we will go deep into the interior of the electric guitar. For a Strat electric guitar, you need to remove all the strings before you can remove the whole guard. If the control part of the electric guitar is installed from the back of the body, it will be much simpler.

Screw off the screws and open the board - you should be able to do it with your fingernails. If you can't, turn the guitar over and let it fall off by itself. It should also be noted here that never pry the board with a screwdriver, which may damage the wooden piano body.

Tidy up the wire and take a picture with your mobile phone so that even if you accidentally break a wire, you can find its location.

Now we can start repairing. If your knob rotates beyond the normal range, you need to fix it well. Find a socket wrench of appropriate size, compress the bottom of the knob, fix it in the correct position, and then tighten the nut. This is the simplest repair method.

Now let's study the problem of noise. The back of the knob is sealed, but dust and various sundries may fall in, so there will be noise when turning the knob. The inside of the knob can be seen from the seam, so it can be cleaned.

Take out the cleaner, connect the straw to the nozzle, and then spray it into the knob from the joint. Be careful not to spray too much.

Shake the knob quickly for more than ten times to clean up the residue. If it can't be repaired, it's time to replace the knob directly. Record which wires are connected, then remove the solder joint at the connection, screw off the nut, and then replace the new knob.

After installing the new knob in the piano body, find the connection method of the circuit according to the photos, notes, or tape marks are taken before and put all the components back in place. That's good - at least another few thousand times won't make any noise!
