What Is Potentiometer?
Potentiometer is an adjustable electronic component. It is composed of a resistor and a rotating or sliding system. When a voltage is applied between the two fixed contacts of the resistance body, the position of the contact on the resistance body is changed by rotating or sliding system, and a voltage which is related to the position of the moving contact can be obtained between the moving contact and the fixed contact. It is mostly used as a voltage divider. At this time, the potentiometer is a four-terminal element. Potentiometer is basically a sliding rheostat. It has several styles. It is generally used in speaker volume switch and laser head power adjustment.
What Is Potentiometer Knobs?
In order to do fine adjustment of resistance of the potentiometer, a knob is installed on the handle of the potentiometer. The commonly used potentiometer knobs can be divided into cylindrical knobs, disc knobs and single shoulder knobs according to their shape. According to the connection mode with potentiometer, the knobs can be generally divided into screw fastening type and shaft surface locking type. Potentiometer knobs are usually made of plastic and they can be made into various color knobs. Some knobs are electroplate with metal or covered with aluminum alloy shell.
The screw fastening knob is often used together with a potentiometer with a plane milled on the shaft end. Its indication correctness depends on the installation position of the potentiometer. The disadvantage of screw fastening knob is that it is easy to loosen during use.
Unlike screw fastening knob, the shaft surface locking knob tightly interlocks the metal sleeve l with the potentiometer shaft handle by rotating the nut or screw, which is not easy to loosen. In addition, one of the biggest advantages of it is that its connection orientation with the potentiometer can be arbitrarily determined within 3600, which is not affected by the installation position of the potentiometer. It is much more convenient for the installation of the potentiometer.
The potentiometer knob is actually a variable resistor. It is called a potentiometer because its function in the circuit is to obtain an output voltage that is related to the input voltage (applied voltage).
The unit of potentiometer resistance is the same as that of resistor. The basic unit is also ohm, which is represented by the symbol Ω. Potentiometer is represented in the circuit by the letter R or RP.
