A control ford radio volume knob is a rotary device used to provide manual input adjustments to a mechanical/electrical system when grasped and turned by a human operator, so that differing extent of knob rotation corresponds to different desired input. Control knobs are a simpler type of input hardware and one of the most common components in control systems, and are found on all sorts of devices from taps and gas stoves to optical microscopes, potentiometers, radio tuners and digital cameras, as well as in aircraft cockpits.
How does control knob work?
A control bose volume knob works by turning a shaft which connects to the component which produces the actual input. Common control components used include potentiometers, variable capacitors, and rotary switches. An example where the knob does not produce a variation in an electrical signal may be found in many toasters, where the darkness touch film volume knob moves the thermostat in such a way as to change the temperature at which it opens and releases the cooked toast. The volume control on a stereo or radio acts like the valve on a water tap, stopping the total volume of current from flowing. In the case of sound equipment, it does this by adding a resistive network that can gradually be removed to let more and more electric current through. Each manufacturer does this with a slightly different mechanism.
Jon Herron, director of communications for Madrigal Audio Labs in Middletown, Conn., a designer and manufacturer of audio and video equipment, described two types of such a mechanism, called a potentiometer because it produces differences in electrical potential."One kind uses a special kind of plastic, developed for the aerospace industry, that is somewhat conductive, offering moderate resistance to electricity, unlike most plastic, which is a wonderful insulator," he said. "A wire is connected to one end. A metal brush moving along the length of the plastic changes the amount of plastic between the brush and the wire, thereby changing the resistance. The farther apart they are, the harder it is for the juice to get through."
This device can be either in a straight line with a slider or wrapped in a circle, so that a volume knob connected to a wiper runs in a circle along the doughnut-shaped piece of plastic. It does not impart much signal of its own but is very expensive, Herron said.
A more common and less expensive device is a long piece of copper or other metal wire, wound up in a tight coil like a Slinky. A wire is connected at one end, and a sharp wire cruises along the top of the Slinky.
Depending on where it makes contact, there are more or fewer turns of wire between one contact and another. "Its big disadvantage," Herron said, "is that it imparts a sound of its own, changes sound quality, and in some cases actually delivers a product that sounds different depending on volume level."
